The story behind Hell Hazed Over dates back a couple of years to when the hazy beer trend was really starting to pick up steam. The pinnacle of brewing had been to craft the most brilliantly clear IPA possible, and this new movement seemingly disregarded years of tradition. Skepticism and resistance reigned at Alter, and it seemed the impossibility of brewing a hazy IPA was absolute. However, the trend did not slow, and new (quite delicious) examples began to emerge throughout the country. Thus, the brew team delved deeply into researching how to make their best version of the style, which eventually lead to their flagship hazy IPA. That… was when Hell Hazed Over.

Hell Hazed Over 6-packs of 12oz. cans will be headed to their distributors, Schamberger Bros. and Lakeshore Beverage, the first week of October. Availability will be throughout the Chicago metropolitan area, and retail establishments should be receiving cases to coincide with the taproom debut on October 7^th.

“We are a small but growing brewery, and we couldn’t be happier that Matt is joining us,” said Hedrick, when asked about McCowan’s addition to the team. “His wealth of knowledge will help us elevate our beer and our company to the next level.”

McCowan has been brewing professionally for the past eight years, but truly dove into the craft when he journeyed to Central Waters Brewing Company (Amherst, WI) in 2013. It was there that he honed his brewing skills and became an integral part of one of the oldest and most established barrel-aging programs in the country. In 2014, when an opportunity to become one of the founding brewers at Lagunitas presented itself, he jumped at the challenge. Thus began a 5 year journey of working for the largest brewery in Illinois.

Alter approached McCowan in late 2018 about the position of head brewer, and they formed an immediate connection. “I came to Alter because it has all the ingredients to make whatever beer we can imagine, and they [owners Mark Hedrick and David Yob] were on board with that from the beginning,” he said. McCowan also believed the town of Downers Grove had all the ingredients of a great place to live, and now resides there with his wife and son.

“The craft of brewing is an old one that has several paths to navigate,” said McCowan. “It is my intention to maintain the trails we have already walked, and discover new ones as we experiment. While the unexplored can be full of surprises (good and bad), I am confident that we will find new heights that both Alter and the community will be proud of. Cheers to that.”

Sprinkman Corporation, headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Sprinkman has been supplying food and beverage processing equipment since its founding in 1929 and has provided systems for numerous breweries across the country.

Customers can expect to see the effects of this increased capacity both in the taproom and at purveyors of fine craft beer over the next few months.

Downers Grove, IL – Alter Brewing Company announced today that they have finished commissioning their new canning line and will begin sales of 6-packs on May 17^th. Cans will initially be offered in the taproom, but owners expect to begin limited circulation to local markets soon thereafter.

Alter recently completed an expansion into 4 adjacent units, adding 6400 sq. ft. to the existing 8,000 sq. ft. brewery & taproom. This new space is home to an American Beer Equipment LinCan canning line (capable of filling 35 cans per minute), as well as new administrative offices and increased storage for barrel aged beers.

“With the addition of the canning line we are excited to get more Alter beer out to the public,” commented David Yob, co-founder of Alter. The first beer to debut will be Alterior Motive, their well-balanced flagship IPA. It will be followed by another fan favorite, Center Line – their easy-drinking golden ale, in the weeks that follow. The cans will eventually be distributed to local retail establishments by Schamberger Brothers, Inc., headquartered in Villa Park, IL.

To keep up with the current high demand on draft accounts, as well as the increased production due to canning, Alter will also be bolstering its brewing capacity by adding four 40 barrel fermenters and one 60 barrel brite tank.
