The craft beer movement has been credited with reviving abandoned industrial zones and local economies, but a new trend is emerging. Established breweries who are looking for the perfect place to build a second location are opting to open farm brewery destinations.

Farm brewery destinations are good news for the rural communities where these breweries put down roots. As South Dakota State University’s Community Vitality Field Specialist Paul Thares reported in December 2018, “All across the country in rural areas and within downtrodden neighborhoods, craft breweries are helping communities overcome economic hurdles.” And NPR shared that “the idea of a craft brewery as a model for small-town revitalization is being tested across the Midwest.”

Grab your fellow beer lovers and hit the country roads to visit these farm brewery destinations.

Trillium Brewing Company | Connecticut

With a stated mission “to create a lifestyle through craft beer,” Trillium has grown to five locations, with Trillium Farm serving as its New England farmhouse destination in North Stonington, Connecticut, which will feature beers made with estate-grown ingredients. “The farm coexists with our other breweries in a symbiotic and sustainable relationship as an agricultural resource and value-added outlet for our organic waste streams, which include spent brewers grain and kitchen scraps. Ultimately our farm is an extension of our supply chain that helps clearly articulate our values to our customers while contributing to the Northeast grain shed and local food supply chain,” says owner JC Tetreault. He’s practicing a lesson in patience as his team completes a rigorous multi-year master planning process “while using this interim time to restore the soil ecology. We have a ‘forever’ time horizon for both Trillium and the farm, and while it will take further years to reap significant harvests, if you have the perspective of what we are trying to achieve in our lifetimes and beyond, its helps to set the perspective that it’s really not so long to wait.”

(More: New York Farm Breweries are About Local Agriculture, Not Location)

Bad Martha Brewing | Massachusetts

Bad Martha Brewery opened its farm brewery in East Falmouth. (Bad Martha Brewery)

General Manager Joshua Flanders says that owner Jonathan Blum dreamed of opening a grain-to-glass brewery during his corporate years as an executive at Yum Brands. When he retired, he did just that with a “focus on an artisanal craft process and utilizing as many local and special ingredients as possible.” They decided to open their East Falmouth Farmer’s Brewery & Tasting Room five years after the grand opening of their Edgartown location located on Martha’s Vineyard. Flanders says strategic expansion came about because “being in Falmouth allows us to stay open year-round and have easy access to the mainland while keeping with the people and culture we know so well here on Cape Cod and the islands. It was a natural next step for us.” Their neighbors are Mahoney’s Garden Center, which has been growing hops, herbs, and other ingredients for the brewery, but Bad Martha will grow its own hops this year.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. | North Carolina

At its second location near Asheville, North Carolina, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. likes to say they’re “pouring from the garden.” The back deck overlooks a large garden you can stroll through filled with flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables that go directly into their batches of beer that sit in stunning copper pots. “What we primarily focus on in Mills River is ‘farm to table’ by supporting the taproom. That being said, we do grow ingredients for brewing from time to time and are looking for ways to increase this down the road,” explains Sierra Nevada’s Natural Resource Team. They made a huge investment in sustainability, becoming the first U.S. production brewery to be certified LEED® Platinum, and employ an Estate Garden Technician.

Tree House Brewing Company | Massachusetts

The team behind Tree House added what it dubbed as “the third vertex to complete the Tree House Triangle: Tree House Orchard & Farm Fermentory!” This 100-acre working farm in Charlton provides grass-fed cattle, a produce and flower program, apple trees, and plenty of prime soil so they can play with adding ingredients to their innovative, ever-changing 25 craft beers on tap and is slated to open this spring.

Fonta Flora | North Carolina

Fonta Flora’s Todd Boera says going plow-to-pint was part of their concept “from the jump. Our concept and guiding compass was creating beers with a sense of place and agricultural purpose. Even at our original location in downtown Morganton, North Carolina, we brewed all of our beers with local malt and a wide variety of different local farmed and foraged ingredients. From that, building our second location and production facility on a farm seemed like a natural progression that would allow us to cultivate our own ingredients and truly represent what it means to be an agriculturally focused brewery.” They revived the idyllic 53-acre, historic Whippoorwill Dairy Farm in 2019 by combining forces with the Foothills Land Conservancy, who acquired 44 of the acres and immediately donated them to Lake James State Park, which borders the property.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery | Virginia

Hardywood Park’s owners snapped up a 22-acre parcel in West Creek about 20 miles from the brewery’s first location near downtown Richmond, Virginia. The team invested about $30 million to include a taproom, beer garden, orchard, and natural amphitheater. They actually scouted more than 100 locations before finding this beauty.

Oskar Blues Brewery | North Carolina

After riding his bike in Pisgah, North Carolina, owner Dale Katechis knew that Brevard was the place for his East Coast operations, which opened in 2012. Then in 2014, he purchased a 145-acre historic farm eight miles away in Hendersonville that butts up to the Pisgah National Forest. They aren’t utilizing the property as a production farm; instead, they’ve transformed it into a biking destination and event venue, hosting the brewery’s Burning CAN Festival there every August. Aaron Baker, Oskar Blues’ senior marketing manager, says that the setup has been a challenge: “For the REEB Ranch, the most challenging aspect is simply communicating to folks about what it’s all about. It doesn’t fit into any established categories so it can be tough to describe,” Baker says. The venture has led to the company also launching a mountain bike brand, REEB Cycles.

Burial Beer Co. | North Carolina

Asheville’s Burial Beer uses a space to showcase artists along with its Forestry Camp Bar and Restaurant. (Burial Beer)

Burial Beer out of Asheville, North Carolina, also purchased an historic slice of land–formerly barracks for Civilian Conservation Corps under FDR’s presidency–a few miles from their original taproom in Asheville’s South Slope beer district. Although the six buildings on the 2-acre tract look like barns and the property has a farm vibe, owners Jess and Doug Reiser and Tim Gromley aren’t growing their own goods. They opened this destination and production brewery to show off other local farmers, potters, and artisans, as well as “showcasing breweries from around the country and world, winemakers, and craft distillers” at their on-site farm-to-table restaurant, Forestry Camp Bar and Restaurant, explains Jess. She says they chose Asheville because, “It’s a place where people want to live, they care so deeply about this city and it shows through their interactions with one another and the intention behind their daily lives. This city is very inspirational and while we loved Seattle, we were looking for a place that we could really impact and vice versa, and feel supported by.”

Ever Grain Brewing | Pennsylvania

Ever Grain Brewing in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, announced in late 2019 that it is also venturing into the farm brewery world. The brewery’s founders were inspired by “the owners’ love of funky farmhouse beers they drank from Jester King and Forest and Main,” head brewer Derek Testerman tells BreweriesInPennsylvania.com. The second location will feature oak fermented, bottle conditioned, mixed-culture beers, experimental ales, and native ales.

Rogue Farms | Oregon

In the hop fields at Rogue Farms in Oregon. (Rogue)

Rogue has built quite the empire, with a total of nine “Rogue-ries” located throughout Oregon and a brewhouse in Issaquah, Washington. Their farm brewery also has a taproom featuring a limited menu and 12 beers on draft, many created using the farm’s bounty. Communication and Marketing Manager Amanda Zessin shares that the global hop shortage in the mid-2000s–due to poor weather and a storage facility catching fire in Washington–prompted Rogue to open the farm in 2008. “To prevent ever having to tell our brewmaster at the time, John ‘More Hops’ Maier that we couldn’t get enough hops for him to brew with, we decided to grow our own. We went through the yellow pages to call every hop farmer we could find and Coleman Agriculture in Independence, Oregon, called us back.”

So pack a picnic, load your favorite road trip playlist, and make your next beercation plans to visit a farm brewery this year.

The air in Chattanooga’s walkable, historic Southside neighborhood crackles with promise. You can feel that it’s getting ready to explode. New craft breweries fling open their doors by the minute, darling eateries take over recently empty historic storefronts, and funky coffee houses sprout up in every nook and cranny.

I wandered into Kenny’s — an adorable minimalist eatery that recently opened in an exposed pipe, wood floor, wide-open room — looking for advice from locals. The staff is super friendly (and hip!). The manager says many of the places like Wanderlinger Brewing are new. I asked if now was the time to open a business or buy property in this rapidly developing, tucked away section of Chattanooga. The answer is yes.

The city is attracting everyone from creative entrepreneurs to foodies and beer geeks. If you’re looking to explore this new Southern hot spot, here’s a walkable guide to Chattanooga’s southside breweries.

(VISIT: Find a U.S. Brewery)

Chattanooga Brewing Co.

Chestnut St. Brown Ale is Chattanooga Brewery’s best-selling beer. (Chattanooga Brewing)

The folks behind Chattanooga’s oldest brewery seek to connect to the past.

“This area had a large German-speaking population in those days, and our namesake produced high quality beers for the community,” says Mark Marcum, co-owner of Chattanooga Brewing Co.

The original CBC opened in 1890 and inspire the name of their mug club. Prohibition closed it down 25 years later.

Today, the brewery sits across the street from Finley Stadium, home for Chattanooga FC, an amateur soccer team, along with University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s football and soccer teams. Home of easy-drinking beers, CBC’s most popular brew is the Chestnut St. Brown Ale. Be sure to try it before or after catching a game.

(READ: The American Brown Ale Beer Style is Anything But Boring)

Wanderlinger Brewing Co.

Southside also has the distinction of being home to The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, which certainly adds to its charm and infuses the area with a youthful persona.

In fact, brothers and co-owners Chris and Mike Dial fell in love with the city during their college days when Mike would make the nearly two-hour drive from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.

“It was only natural to decide to open our business together in this vibrant, amazing city,” says Chris. “Chattanooga is becoming a mini-Asheville. With 10 breweries and more to come, we are creating a brewery destination city in an already amazing city that draws in folks from all over the country.”

He foresees five to seven more breweries opening within the next three years. The walkability between seven of Chattanooga’s current breweries certainly makes the budding city attractive to hopheads, Chris says.

And like Chattanooga Brewing Co., Wanderlinger aimed to honor the city’s rich history by revitalizing a 110-year-old building, which took three years to renovate.

Bonus: It’s kid-friendly until 8 p.m. and pet-friendly all the time. There’s music three nights a week, and they often have food trucks.

As Chris says, Wanderlinger is all about guests “lingering” as long as they’d like.

(TRAVEL: 2019 Great American Beer Bars)

Hutton & Smith Brewing Company

Hutton & Smith is best-known for its IPAs. (Hutton & Smith)

For Melanie and Joel Kratstrunk, Chattanooga’s sizzling potential as one of the country’s next amazing craft beer hubs drew them to move and open Hutton & Smith Brewing Company in 2015.

“Chattanooga has a real outdoor community, and the people here are friendly — [it’s] growing exponentially. I expect to see at least twice the number of breweries here in the next three years,” Melanie says.

Hutton & Smith is best-known for three of its IPAS: Igneous, a dry-hopped IPA; Bivoauc, a black IPA, and Promenade, a juicy IPA.

Melanie also nails exactly why Chattanooga is on the brink of big things: “[It has] all the benefits of a big city in a small town, and many of the breweries here are in a walkable distance from either another brewery, or a great local attraction.”

More Chattanooga Breweries

Of course, you can add many more breweries to your beercation agenda in Chattanooga.

There is the new Naked River Brewing across the stadium from Chattanooga Brewing. Heaven & Ale Brewing Co. is in an industrial-chic spot. OddStory offers a sleek lounge vibe, and long-standing Terminal Brewhouse, inside a flatiron building that abuts the former train station.

Southside has some darling vacation rentals popping up as locals realize how lucrative Chatt’s growing tourism market can be.

Keep in mind that besides the amazing walkability of this up-and-coming city, you can also jump on the Choo Choo. The free shuttle will cart you to and from downtown.

Last year, we shared 9 Breweries That Prove You Can’t Beat a Brewery Wedding, so we wanted to create another collection for couples on the hunt for a brewery wedding venue that ups the fun quotient. As Mary Mayo, Catawba Brewing’s creative director, surmises, “Anybody who is even considering a brewery wedding is automatically a really fun person!” Unique design also typically comes built-in at many breweries, and the juxtaposition between beautiful flowers, centerpieces, and other decorations against historic brick warehouse walls, exposed pipes or aging barrels makes for striking photo backdrops.

[newsletter_signup_box]

And while not every brewery has stepped into the wedding market, those that have tend to give couples lots of freedom when it comes to planning their big day, since a laid-back attitude and atmosphere are what make breweries so fun to hang out in — wedding day or not! So get inspired by the creative brides and grooms who’ve held weddings at these eight unique brewery venues.

Catawba Brewing | Charlotte, NC

Barrel Room: 230 guests seated

Catawba Brewing’s success hosting weddings at their Asheville brewery led them to invest in building out a 4,300-square-foot private barrel room in their Charlotte location. They specifically wanted to create a space that would be stunning for both ceremonies and receptions.“It actually saves them money and frustration,” Mayo says, “and we love being such an important part of our customers’ lives.”

Mayo also notes that couples aren’t limited to brewery bar stools and tables, and are welcome to utilize any furniture options they want. She encourages wedding parties to look into all the fun shuttle options that exist in Charlotte — classic old cars, trolleys, carriages, party buses, or even being chauffeured by the Ghostbusters.

SanTan Brewing | Chandler, AZ

Indoor + outdoor space: 120 guests

Looking for a brewery that also serves excellent food? SanTan Brewing has made a commitment to “changing the face of catering by embracing a niche of being one of the only breweries in Arizona to focus on the importance of supplying great food alongside our own great craft beer,” according to their Wedding.com profile. To fulfill this commitment, they offer a large menu with many dishes flavored with their brews, like their SunSpot Gold beer cheese, ale-soaked wings, and ale-battered fries. Their brewpub pizzas, funky burgers (one is topped with a mac and cheese cake!), fun tacos and handcrafted sandwiches will have your guests chowing down in between sips of their craft beer.

A couple walks down the aisle with beers during a wedding at SanTan Brewing. (Megan Robbins)

Besides a focus on offering great food, Special Events and Catering Director Kaitlin Godziela says she works with couples to make their day extra special. One such memorable reception? Godziela says that one couple arranged for Sparky the Sun Devil, Arizona State University’s mascot, to hang out because they were both huge ASU fans. “I’m also a graduate of ASU, so it was fun to have Sparky in the house,” she says.

Brown’s Brewing Co. | Troy, NY

Revolution Hall: up to 300 guests; Trojan Room: 30 guests

For Brown’s Brewing, transforming their 150-year-old warehouse into a taproom, barrelhouse and two special events spaces was something they wanted to do for their fans and New York community 25 years ago. Today, Brown’s now hosts about 75 weddings per year, all focused on beer. “We allow couples a day with the brewers to make their own brew to be served at their wedding,” explains Carrie Harkin, Brown’s private events manager. Their rental space features eight taps and their catering menu also incorporates Brown’s brews into their recipes — like their oatmeal stout cheese sauce, Cherry Razz Ale barbecue, and pale ale honey mustard. “We offer the option to customize your own menu, and for couples to take pictures right in our brewery and anywhere in our space … with exposed brick and beautiful lighting,” Harkin says.

Revolution Hall is a two-floor European beer hall — complete with a lofted landing overlooking the dance floor — with the bonus of being located right on Troy’s striking waterfront. Seating options include 100-person amphitheater or table seating for up to 300. A slew of lighting, audio, visual and wireless options come together to create a wedding experience that will be distinctly you and distinctly amazing.

A couple poses during a wedding at Brown’s Brewing in NY.
Cahaba Brewing Company | Birmingham, AL

Brewhouse: 3,000+ guests; Private Barrel Room: 350+ guests; Public Taproom: 75 guests; combination of Taproom, Patio, and Barrel Room: 500+ guests

A brewery wedding certainly has the benefit of being a place you can revisit again and again (annual anniversary trips, perhaps?) — and sometimes, a love story starts over a few craft beers. Christy Johnson, Cahaba Brewing’s marketing director, shares that a recently married couple had their very first date at their brewery, got engaged at the brewery, AND got married at the brewery. “It’s incredible we get to play a small role in such memorable moments in people’s lives…it simply does not get better than that,” she says. Cahaba Brewing’s huge space —the historic Continental Gin building located in Birmingham’s hip Avondale —can be completely rented out for gatherings of over 3,000 people.

A wedding party poses at Alabama’s Cahaba Brewing Co. (Cahaba Brewing Co.)

Yet most couples opt to book just the barrel room, a rustic space with exposed brick, concrete floors, and metal beams. Other configurations include incorporating the taproom and their patio. They’ve also hosted many engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers and luncheons, and even post-wedding brunches. Johnson also notes that while they accommodate weddings seven days a week, year-round, Cahaba has noticed an uptick in more weekday and weeknight bookings.

(TRAVEL: 5 Epic Craft Beer Road Trips)

Fenton Winery & Brewery | Fenton, MI

Banquet: 280 guests

Fenton Winery and Brewery gives special attention to their events division as weddings and other gatherings make up a large part of their business. To make the process as easy as possible on the future spouses, Fenton describes their space as a full-service venue with its own dedicated staff. These efforts have paid off as they’ve been dubbed by WeddingSpot.com a “Best Wedding Spot,” perfect for couples looking for an outdoorsy occasion that moves guests from an outdoor ceremony, to an outdoor cocktail hour, to their all-cedar banquet hall for receptions. “We do all our own in-house catering, craft beer and wine, and setup/cleanup for the special day,” explains co-owner Ginny Sherrow, who opened Fenton with her husband Matt in 2007.

Other spaces available to wedding parties when they book Fenton include their outdoor patio with a fireplace, private dressing suites for the wedding parties and their families, and a wine and beer garden. Guests can opt for fully indoor or fully outdoor events, or a combination of both, with many wedding parties utilizing a combination of the two. Couples also get to select which craft beverages will be on tap at the site’s various eight-tap bars. At the end of the day, Sherrow says nothing beats hearing from happy couples who received positive feedback from their attendees. “It’s heartwarming that we could provide the experience for guests to rave about,”she says.

Bristol Brewery | Colorado Springs, CO

Barrel-Aging Room: 50 guests

For a unique setting with a twist for smaller weddings, receptions, or rehersal dinners, couples should explore Colorado Springs’ Ivywild School, an elementary school-turned-gathering and event complex that includes a marketplace, brewery, cocktail bar, coffee roaster, distillery and music venue. The 100-year-old building was renovated in 2013, and the variety of businesses located under the same roof helps couples keep their vendor list small. “Everything is literally down the hall,” explains Jason Littman-Quinn, Bristol Brewery’s brand, sales, and marketing manager.

An unexpected perk has been the ability to offer a space to people who used to go to school at Ivywild. “We’ve had former students get married in the gym,” Littman-Quinn says, “and it makes us all feel happy when couples are walking around the building in their dresses and suits, knowing we helped contribute to their wedding.”

New Holland | Grand Rapids, MI

The Zeppelin Cocktail Lounge: 75 guests; Barrel Stave Loft: 200 guests; The Trees: 150 guests; Bridge Street Beer Garden: 250 guests

New Holland made sure to create a welcoming space for events of all types, hosting around 10 weddings each year, but one of their most popular options among wedding parties is the Zeppelin Cocktail Lounge, which overlooks their distilling equipment. Bonus: New Holland also has an Artisanal Spirits line, brewing up whiskeys, liqueurs, gins and rums, so guests can enjoy a full bar here. “As a thank you for hosting their wedding reception here, we typically customize a bottle of our Beer Barrel Bourbon with the bride and groom’s names and wedding date, paired with two of our rock glasses,” Caitlin Gallagher, New Holland’s catering events sales manager, says.

New Holland Brewing in western Michigan hosts about 10 brewery weddings a year. (New Holland Brewing)

Gallagher says their venue typically attracts “laid-back” couples.“Our mentality when it comes to weddings, and events in general,is ‘the art of possible,’” she says. “There is no idea too crazy or too far-fetched to consider executing. You tell us what your dream wedding looks like — and we will try our hardest to make that happen for you.” They even helped one panicked bride pull together her wedding in a month after their original venue became unavailable. Talk about rolling out the red carpet!

Pelican Brewing Company | Pacific City, OR

Haystack Room: 40 guests; Pelican Room: 90 guests, Barrel Room: 30 guests

For couples that want to combine a gorgeous beach wedding with a brewery wedding, look no further than Pelican Brewing Company in Pacific City, Oregon. This breathtaking venue has floor-to-ceiling windows to show off Cape Kiwanda and Haystack Rock, and the Pelican Room connects to their outdoor patio and private beach, where many couples opt to hold their ceremonies before returning to the elegant indoor space for the reception. Plus, their Barrel Room also makes for a fun atmosphere for a rehearsal or cocktail reception for up to 30 guests, making Pelican a potential one-stop shop for all your wedding weekend activities at Oregon’s only beachfront brewery.

(COOK WITH CRAFT BEER: Find Recipes Galore)

Pelican hosts about a wedding or so per month, and while Mariah Surat, Pelican’s event and marketing manager, says they love receiving feedback about how much guests and wedding parties enjoy the venue’s views, food, and brews, an unexpected reward comes with hosting weddings. “The best compliments are when previous wedding couples fall in love with our restaurant, people and town and move to Pacific City! We have about a handful of our couples that are currently residing in Pacific City now or have a vacation home in town.”

With unique brewery wedding venues that run the gamut from beachfront locales to intimate barrel-room spaces, it’s no wonder that more beer-loving couples than ever are turning to their favorite local craft breweries (or favorite craft brewery destinations) to make their wedding day extra special. Besides, isn’t an event at a craft brewery almost a guaranteed good time? Your guests will certainly think so!

Sideways Farm & Brewery skips the typical crowdfunding avenue and cobbles together a brewery with a brick by brick fundraiser in former brick hub Etowah, North Carolina.

The post Sideways Farm & Brewery Launches Brick by Brick Fundraiser appeared first on CraftBeer.com.

Crowdfunding has become a popular way for aspiring brewers to get money to make their brewing dreams come true. Brewery owners launch campaigns on Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Crowdbrewed.com. And in return for contributions, backers get brewery swag, bar credit or other perks.

But for Sideways Farm & Brewery, owners Jon and Carrieann Schneider decided to go a different route. They wanted a way to remember the folks who chipped in when they needed the help. So they partnered with Fundraising Bricks, a laser brick engraver, to finish their new brewery one stone at a time.

Brick by Brick Fundraiser

The seed for the brick campaign was planted many years ago when the Schneiders received an engraved brick as a wedding gift.

“Over the years, we’ve taken pictures of our feet, and later of our children’s feet, surrounding that brick. It gave us a connection to that community, to that place, to the wedding,” Carrieann says. “We want our community, family, and friends to have that same connection to Sideways Farm and Brewery.”

Etowah, North Carolina’s history as a brickyard hub also factored in to the Schneider’s brick by brick fundraiser. They saw it as a way to honor the brewery’s past while laying the groundwork for its future.

Supporters can choose from five brick options depending on the size and amount of text. All the bricks will be shipped directly to the brewery where they will become part of its large front patio. The Schneiders hope customers will kick back with brews, fireflies and friends there, embracing a mantra of the South: “Life is better on the porch.”

“Product of the Land and Place”

The Schneiders want their beer to be a “product of the land and place.” (Sideways Farm & Brewery)

“It is easy for consumers to forget, when they are walking between breweries in an industrial area or downtown shopping district, that beer, much like wine, is truly a product of the land and the place. Beer can have a sense of terroir. Having consumers come out to the farm and see crops growing that will be in their beer is a completely different experience,” Carrieann says.

The brick by brick fundraiser ends Jan. 31.

So far, the Schneiders have been overwhelmed by the support of family and friends, who’ve been pushing Jon to open a commercial brewery since he started brewing seven years ago. But many local residents and local companies have also chipped in, as well as craft-beer lovers all over the world.

“That being said, it is a huge front porch and there is always room for more!” Carrieann says.

(READ: California Brewery Couple Faces the Fires Together)

Staying Small

While many people suggested using one of the many crowdfunding websites or trying to woo investors, Carrieann says those just weren’t the right routes for them.

“Since we want to stay a small family-run brewery, we didn’t think we had a model that would attract investors. Who wants to invest in a company that doesn’t want to grow substantially?” she says. “We did look at crowdfunding, but the brick campaign had more meaning to us personally. And we set the prices of the bricks low so that almost everyone could be a part of our community.”

The Schneiders’ mission is that Sideways Farm & Brewery will be a truly local brewery, serving local residents and using local ingredients whenever possible.

(VISIT: Find a U.S. Brewery)

Setting a Foundation

A major financial setback that pushed their grand opening date back almost a year also prompted the brick by brick fundraiser.

“We put our 50 percent down payment on an American-made, 3.5-barrel brewing system in April only to find out shortly before its expected delivery in October that the company was going out of business and not refunding our deposit,” Carrieann says.

After scrambling to find another brewing equipment manufacturer that builds its products in the U.S., the Schneiders discovered Psycho Brew based in Greenville, Michigan. Once they receive their new equipment, they’ll have another six to eight weeks before opening because all their beers will be bottled conditioned.

“When you come to Sideways Farm & Brewery for a tasting, we will be pouring out of our bottles, much like a winery,” Carrieann says.

And customers can sip those beers on a literal foundation of support, laid brick by brick.

For craft beer lovers, you can’t beat the cool quotient of a brewery wedding. Spaces range from industrial to rustic to wide open outdoor areas that all make for a striking backdrop, and many have relationships with local farms, caterers and food trucks or have on-site restaurants.

[newsletter_signup_box]

Brewery weddings also offer a unique venue that comes with two huge bonuses: a larger variety of craft beers on tap than you’d find at normal reception halls, and the ability to visit again and again to relive the day (unlike most wedding venues!).

(MORE: So You’re Marrying a Beer Geek)

There are hundreds of independent craft breweries eager to host you on your big day. Here’s a look at how nine roll out the red carpet for a brewery wedding.

Stable Craft Brewing at Hermitage Hill Farm in Virginia hosts weddings.
Stable Craft Brewing at Hermitage Hill Farm | Waynesboro, VA

Saddleback Ballroom: 50-200 seated

We’ve all seen pictures of winery weddings that take our breath away, and the pastoral setting at Hermitage Hill Farm, home to Stable Craft Brewing, evokes the same reaction. As a working farm and stable, Hermitage’s ballroom overlooks hop yards and has its own tasting room. Guests can participate in a Carrot Happy Hour, feeding the horses while sipping on cocktails between the ceremony and reception. Couples can also opt to craft their own wedding beer.

Owner Nikki Nargi says, “We have noticed a rise in interest from brides and grooms wanting to host a brewery wedding,” and notes that couples love “the uniqueness of the facility from the incredible woodwork to the surrounding mountain views.”

Mission Brewery | San Diego

The Cellar and Loft: 2 levels, 300 people cocktail or 120 seated

In 2016, Mission expanded their event space and hired an event manager. As a former Wonder Bread factory, the entire building combines brick with exposed beams, rafters and massive skylights to make for a charming urban and rustic setting. Past weddings have featured food trucks, taco carts and traditional catering, with a few couples ordering pizzas for everyone as a late night snack.

(VISIT: Find a U.S. Craft Brewery)

Revolution Brewing | Chicago

Brewer’s Lounge: 130 cocktail or 110 seated; Kedzie Tap Room: 250 cocktail or 150-180 buffet seating

Revolution has hosted over 500 weddings over the past six years and has a team of three dedicated to party planning.

“Nearly every couple comments on how easy we make things for them. We have a team of people running the show the day of the reception to ensure things are set up and run smoothly,” shares aptly titled “Party Captain” Steph Aksland.

Booking Revolution’s taproom requires a minimum of 150 guests, and the space features high ceilings, a long mahogany bar and tall windows looking into their 90,000 sq. ft. production facility. Yet if it’s elegance you want, opt for the Brewer’s Lounge with its eye-catching wood elements including an intricate ceiling, glossy floors and built-in bookcases flanking a fireplace. Fun globe fixtures and brick walls complete the look.

Chicago’s Revolution Brewing has hosted 500 weddings in the last few years alone.
Monday Night Brewing | Atlanta

Tasting Room: 4,000 sq. ft. for 200+ seated; Outdoor Patio: 5,000 sq. ft. for 200+ seated

For a slightly funky vibe and space large enough to accommodate over 400 guests, consider Monday Night. White lights hang from the ceiling, neckties cover one wall (a homage to their mantra, “Weekends Are Overrated”), and oversized black-and-white graphics don the space. A few couples have opted to utilize their outdoor patio for the ceremony, then bring the party inside post-nuptials.

Monday Night Tasting Room Director Carlen Funk actually hosted her own wedding at the brewery and loves working with couples because “brides and grooms who want to get married at a brewery are generally super easy to work with and are really excited about getting married here.” It’s often convincing the parents (or grandparents) that’s the harder sell.

(TRAVEL: Plan Your Next Beercation)

Night Shift Brewing | Everett, MA

Night Shift can fit 60 people seated and up to 180 standing for a brewery wedding. (Credit: Night Shift)

Taproom: 180 standing or 60 seated

Night Shift’s industrial warehouse aesthetic features Edison light bulbs and metal piping supporting shelving adjacent to an outdoor patio and their beautiful new second tap room, Annex. Some couples have chosen to blend beer as part of a unity ceremony, while others have included corn hole tournaments. Couples can book Thursday, Friday or Saturday night affairs, and brides can make grand entrances through the loading dock or the Annex, which remains open to the public during weddings.

Lakewood Brewing Co. | Garland, TX

Taproom: 4,000 sq. ft. for 200+ seated

Lakewood got into the wedding venue game because they noticed a lot of proposals happening on-site.

“Beer brings people together, so it makes sense to have unions happen here as well,” says owner Wim Bens.

The inside has a sleek aesthetic with two stories of windows separating the taproom from the production area, while their covered outdoor beer garden sits under an open-sided metal barn.

Lakewood Brewing decided to hold weddings after they noticed a lot of proposals happening at the brewery.
Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens | Escondido, CA

Garden: 25-150 guests

As one of America’s largest craft breweries, Stone Brewing’s commitment to quality extends to their wedding venue, too. In Stone’s one-acre garden, you’ll be surrounded by a bubbling brook, fragrant herbs, natural stone walls, fruit trees and mature trees that provide a stunning backdrop for your wedding festivities. They offer ceremony, decor, and reception packages, while tables can be set up on the grass or on the wood patio. Their award-winning chefs abide by a commitment to Slow Food, and receptions can include wine and champagne.

Southern Star Brewing | Conroe, TX

Taproom: 3,200 sq. ft. for max 200 seated

Southern Star’s property allows for several ceremony or reception locations, including a second-story taproom overlooking their barrels, an outdoor beer garden, or a tree-covered plot in the back for those looking to up the romance factor.

“Each wedding we host is like recreating the day we first fell in love with beer and that is a moment we want to share,” explains Events Director Danielle Betz. They also have a stage for live music and a beer shack to keep the party going.

Boulevard | Kansas City

Muehlebach Suite: 3,600 sq. ft. for 170 seated, 225 standing

The wow factors at Boulevard include a tiled round bar, huge windows overlooking the city, and gorgeous lighting. Boulevard’s spokeswoman Julie Weeks shares that for her team, one of the best perks about being a wedding venue is getting to be a part of each couple’s story.

“The couples that chose Boulevard as their location for such an important celebration usually have a story that includes the brewery in some meaningful way–whether they took our public tour on a first date, or perhaps made a mental note when they saw our unique event venues,” she says.

Check out these 12 brewery music venues you should visit in the South. These breweries have made music part of their lifeblood.

You could argue that beer and music go together better than any other beer pairing. Bold words indeed when you consider all the combinations of beer and food, beer and lawn games, beer and … everything.

But when we acknowledge that beer has been part of celebrations for thousands of years — from ancient warriors singing and sloshing mead to providing liquid courage for modern-day wannabe karaoke stars — breweries and music is match made in beer heaven.

We’ve rounded up 12 brewery music venues to visit in the South. These Southern breweries have made music a part of their lifeblood.

(VISIT: Find a U.S. Brewery)

Highland Brewing Company | Asheville, NC

Twenty-three years ago, Highland set the tone for Asheville’s craft beer scene to be forever linked to the area’s deep musical roots.

As the city’s first brewery to open since Prohibition, the decision to include an indoor stage in their tasting room has served them so well that they later built an outdoor stage surrounded by shipping container bars and restrooms that they call The Meadow.

“As we developed our Tasting Room, it seemed only natural to blend our craft with the craft of our talented local musicians,” explains marketing manager Molly McQuillan. “We now work with local, regional, and nationally recognized artists, and have music at least four nights per week.”

Highland Brewing Company in Asheville has an indoor and outdoor stage.
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery | Richmond, VA

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery regularly offers live music from both their taproom stage and new outdoor stage. The Richmond brewery also hosts many music events including Bluegrass Festival, Heart & Soul Brew Fest and The Shape of Sound’s epic drum circle.

“We are committed to supporting our community and love to show that by giving local creatives and original artists a stage,” marketing manager Matt Shofner tells CraftBeer.com. “As we feature all genres of sounds —bluegrass, djs spinning vinyl, metal, hip hop and more — music helps us reach and attract wider audiences to the brewery.”

(READ: What Is Craft Beer?)

Quest Brewing Co. | Greenville, SC

Quest features an outdoor stage and invites folks to bring blankets (and kids!) to enjoy live music in their backyard. A food truck typically accompanies their Thursday Night Concert Series, and they host a chili cook-off every January paired with a concert. Live music also happens on many Fridays, too.

Mississippi’s Yalobusha Brewing features laid-back live shows on the weekend. (Credit: Yalobusha Brewing)

Motorworks Brewing | Bradenton, FL

What do you do when you have the largest beer garden in the state of Florida? Build an outdoor stage and feature live music nearly every day of the week, of course.

Motorworks doesn’t stop with just tunes; the beer garden also has a handful of cornhole boards, a large projector screen, and a massive 150-year-old oak tree wrapped in lights. Talk about good times!

AquaBrew | San Marcos, TX

Music is a big deal at AquaBrew. A large “Live Music” sign hangs above the door, and their tagline reads, “AquaBrew stimulates all the senses. Artisanal Cuisine. Craft Beer. Community Feel. Live Music. San Marcos Roots.”

Owner Carlos Russo aims to make AquaBrew THE live music venue of downtown and has his sights on booking big names as well as supporting local artists.

Avondale Brewing Co. | Birmingham, AL

Avondale’s mission from the start was to help revitalize Birmingham’s blighted Avondale neighborhood in part by tapping into its rich, 125-year history. Their efforts have paid off as Thrillist dubbed Avondale “Birmingham’s hippest neighborhood” in 2015, the same year the brewery opened its doors.

Since then, their permanent outdoor stage has attracted the likes of notable acts such as Shakey Graves, Gov’t Mule and Galactic, and a sold-out stop on J. Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only World Tour. The inaugural Southword Summer Series kicks off with Chicago’s Sidewalk Chalk June 22.

Yalobusha Brewing | Water Valley, MS

Yoga at breweries has been a trend for a few years now, but YaloBrew takes it to another level with their live music, yoga and beer events. Fridays and Saturdays often feature laid-back live shows on a small indoor stage surrounded by sacks of grain and kegs in their historic 1860 brick building.

The self-described “funky, music-centric pit stop” boasts both indoor and outdoor stages and their event page promises, “Beer, hugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll!” These music and beer lovers like to mix it up with events like 80s Prom and Twang ‘n Roll, too.

“I love meeting musicians and have made many lifelong friends with them,” says founder and president Ozzy Nelson. “At Mayday, we have original bands with some covers thrown in here and there every Friday and Saturday, and we don’t charge a cover.”

Goodwood Brewing Company | Louisville, KY

The folks at Goodwood tap into Kentucky’s musical roots with their Bluegrass Brunches and Open Bluegrass Jams every Saturday.

“We believe music and beer go hand in hand,” says Paige Peterson, marketing and events manager at Goodword. “Beer offers a sensory experience of taste, aroma, mouthfeel and music elevates that experience, engaging another one of your senses.”

Peterson says the brewery’s Kentucky roots also inspire their love of music.

“We love embracing all things Kentucky. We take cues from America’s Native Spirit: Kentucky Bourbon. All of our beers are barrel-aged or wood-touched and brewed with limestone water, just like bourbon. So embracing Kentucky’s strong ties to Bluegrass just seemed like a natural fit for our taproom.”

Bayou Teche Brewing | Arnaudville, LA

Every Saturday at Bayou Teche Brewing, you’ll find Louisianans and travelers stomping their feet to some of the best bands in the Acadiana region, heavy on the Creole and Cajun varieties. Saturdays also mean Song Trivia and Social Commentary followed by a DJ playing tunes to close out the night. The outdoor stage area is covered and often mingles with sublime smells cooked up by celebrity guest chefs, like soul food king Chef Big G.

Blue Ridge Brewery | Blue Ridge, GA

This brewery doesn’t mess around with other types of events; instead, beer and music lovers know they can enjoy shows every Friday and Saturday on their new outdoor patio stage. One sign sums up Blue Bridge Brewery’s passion for music: “Brewsician,” with hooks for a hanging chalkboard sign touting the name of the evening’s band.

Vino’s Brewpub | Little Rock, AR

One of Vino’s claims to fame? Green Day played this joint before hitting the big leagues, and during their March show at Little Rock’s Verizon Arena, the band gave the brewpub a shout out.

Recently, the crew brought back their Fresh Blood series, serving basically as a tryout for new-to-Vino’s bands on the last Thursday of every month. Touted as “Arkansas’s premiere alternative entertainment venue,” the divey backroom stage features neon lights and hosts all ages shows.

Instagram is an incredible tool for building a following, whether you’re a band, a real estate company or a brewery. The practically mandatory use of hashtags means that you’re automatically targeting people who care about that topic, so people that wouldn’t necessarily discover your brand on Facebook may stumble across your photo on Instagram. Instagram users are also highly engaged, with 60 percent logging in daily. Plus, engagement with brands is highest on Instagram, clocking in at “10 times higher than Facebook, 54 times higher than Pinterest, and 84 times higher than Twitter,” shares Brandwatch.com.

Of course, taking quality pictures and videos helps, but it’s also important to share photos that:

Are posted in real time (or at least look like they are)

Showcase your people and fans

Share behind-the-scenes action

Allow your brewery’s personality to shine through

To help on your quest for Instagram greatness, we’ve stalked the accounts of nine rising breweries that do a great job utilizing Instagram as a way to connect with their audience in a personal, fun and engaging way.

(MORE: 9 Breweries You Should be Following on Facebook)

Other Half Brewing | Brooklyn, NY

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJGJCstheWc/?taken-by=otherhalfnyc

What you can learn from @otherhalfnyc: They frequently use shots by professional photographer @thebeertrekker, and most of their content is crisp, well-lit and nicely shot.

Montauk Brewing Co. | Montauk, NY

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJte-7FDeGP/?taken-by=montaukbrewco

What you can learn from @montaukbrewco: This brewery shows off Montauk in a ton of their photos, showcasing their coastal life and awesome patio. You can almost smell the saltwater.

Hashtag smarts: You’ll find the hashtag #Montauk in almost all of their posts, integrating them in the community and further emphasizing their obvious love for where they work and live.

Monday Night Brewing | Atlanta

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEi41EFNNHJ/?taken-by=mondaynight

What you can learn from @mondaynight: Monday Night’s mantra is “Weekends are Overrated” and “Tie one on,” so you’ll see a lot of ties in the brewery and its marketing materials. That playful attitude stems into some fun pranks, like when they “tie-d” neighbor SweetWater for Earth Day. Themes are also good, and so is letting fans in on your sense of humor and shenanigans.

(MORE: Breweries Share Epic Employee Nicknames with CraftBeer.com)

Alpine Beer Co. | Alpine, CA

https://www.instagram.com/p/BBQywJXK6FJ/?taken-by=alpinebeerco

What you can learn from @alpinebeerco: In just 32 weeks, Alpine has amassed over 12,000 followers on Instagram by averaging 1.3 photos per week — not a bad return on time invested. They also set proper expectations on what their feed will feature in this first post: “beer releases, upcoming events, and world class brews.”

Asheville Brewing Co. | Asheville, NC

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKF7IfFhJ0k/?taken-by=ashevillebrewingco

What you can learn from @ashevillebrewingco: In a word: zany. ABC hasn’t met a meme, crazy image, or beer quote they don’t like. Their consistency in both tone and frequency (they usually post multiple times per day) keeps fans intrigued. Not every post is a hit, but they usually amass at least 50+ likes, with videos typically garnering 1,000+ views. Plus, curating content from other sources can be a great timesaver.

Short’s Brewing Company | Bellaire, MI

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJ_sePCAOai/?taken-by=shortsbrewing

What you can learn from @shortsbrewing: Two things Short’s nails immediately: staking their own hashtag (#shortsbrew) and using the word “fearless” in their Instagram bio. Their pictures back up their word choice, with photos of skateboarding and bike tricks alongside these guys in pink tutus.

Hashtag smarts: #drinkmichiganbeer taps into statewide beer pride, and they use #lifeisshorts frequently, another nod to their personality.

Trillium Brewing | Boston, MA

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKDv6YHjOWP/?taken-by=trilliumbrewing

What you can learn from @trilliumbrewing: Trillium posts a lot of these artistic drawings to coincide with releases and announcing new beers on tap. That same attention to detail and eye for artistry shows up in many of their other posts.

How to take it to the next level: Trillium could add a descriptive bio and mix in varied content to attract even more followers.

Rhinegeist Brewery | Cincinnati, OH

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJTbOStDdPB/?taken-by=rhinegeist

What you can learn from @rhinegeist: Show your beers out and about at events, both local and around the world (or at least your brewery’s gear). Here, Rhinegeist lets everyone know they’ll be at a local tennis match, and plenty of other posts show their instantly recognizable cans as “members” of the community in a sense.

Honorable Mention: Southern Prohibition Brewing | Hattiesburg, MS

https://www.instagram.com/p/BH2OasaA4nm/?taken-by=soprobrewco

What you can learn from @soprobrewco: Southern Prohibition is worth following for the employee birthday spotlights alone. As you can see above, they write a VERY long tongue-in-cheek description of their beloved co-workers accompanied by a hilarious photo of said birthday honoree.

This year at the Craft Brewers Conference during a session I attended about marketing, several people expressed frustration about using Facebook as a business. As someone who works in the digital marketing field daily, I could feel their pain, especially considering that Facebook reach is down 42 percent with that number to climb after Facebook’s June 29 announcement that personal pages will receive an even higher priority going forward.

While this news can be disheartening, companies that put their audience first, follow the 80/20 rule and aim for authentic engagement can still enjoy oodles of success with their Facebook presence. To help, I’ve rounded up 9 breweries that are killing it on Facebook and asked them via Facebook messenger what guides their approach to the platform. For each, you’ll find one example post, why it’s awesome, and how any brand could create a similar post—putting their own flavor and spin on the concept, of course. Like these breweries to learn from their mad Facebook skills or to just drool over their thirst-inducing content.

Post breakdown: Samuel Adams started their #PourOneForward campaign strategically on May 16, which gave them some time to get the message out before Memorial Day weekend, so they could build up to the holiday and continue the campaign through July 5, bookending two of America’s most patriotic holidays.

Takeaway: Each year, brainstorm a few campaigns that can be a focus for several months and help fill your editorial calendar with content that showcases your values and interests.

Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different channels or types of content and stay educated about the latest features and products available.

Post breakdown: This post gives props to the people who made the LEED certification possible, makes fans part of the journey, and emphasizes one of their core values—sustainability.

Takeaway: Share milestones and company news in a way that’s not just a statement, pat on the back, or humble brag by making the milestone about your employees and/or fans.

Their philosophy: “We approach all of our social media with a beer-first approach, keeping out content and overall vision focused on celebrating craft beer. Before we publish a post, we generally ask ourselves if the content is pushing forward our beer and the craft beer industry, if it’s true to our brewery voice, if the messaging is positive and supportive, and if it’s interesting and engaging.”

Followers: 109,000+

Post breakdown: Wisconsinites love their cheese, Packers and beer, so tapping into these passions is a smart move by New Glarus who doesn’t ship out of state because, “It’s a Wisconsin brewery, a Wisconsin sensibility, a Wisconsin way of thinking,” brewmaster and owner Daniel Carey told the Gazette Extra.

Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to geek out over your passions and show pride for where you live; you’ll attract like-minded and local fans.

Post breakdown: This post accomplishes two things: (1) Showcases local pride and (2) taps into a huge event in a relevant way. Plus, how cool that they actually changed the name of a beer because the Cavs won the NBA finals!

Takeaway: Tie in to huge global and state/city events in a personal, authentic way.

Their philosophy: “We want our content to inspire conversation and get people excited about craft beer. We believe that beer brings people together and inspires camaraderie, so our Facebook page should do just that—invite more people in to experience the Great Lakes story and feel like a part of our family.”

3. Wicked Weed Brewing

Followers: 37,700+

Post breakdown: Wicked Weed’s CEO tackled a negative occurrence head-on after discovering their latest bottle release was not finished fermenting and gave customers the option for buybacks or instructions how to store the beer, plus a gift of a 2015 bottle of the same beer, Golden Angel. They treated their fans like the craft beer lovers they are in a respectful, proactive way.

Takeaway: Your true fans don’t expect perfection, so don’t shy away from difficult situations. Plus, hearing directly from the CEO/owner/brewmaster occasionally is another awesome social tactic, especially if there’s been an issue that could make fans unhappy.

Their philosophy: “In today’s world, you only have a short amount of time to gain someone’s attention. The key in gaining that attention is through striking imagery. That’s really where it starts and stops. If we can get you to notice us even for a split second, we can use that as a platform to get across any narrative we’d like to tell. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with value. Whether it’s through talking about a new beer release, or a more education-driven piece, we’d like to think we are providing our followers with value more than anything else.”

Post breakdown: Here’s a nanobrewery who’s nailing digital all-around from their amazing illustrations, to tone across all touchpoints, to authenticity. Although they have not yet reached 10,000 fans, they’ve laid the digital groundwork to grow as big as they can dream. Being a coastal brewery with plenty of ties to the sea (check out the adorable octopus on their growler!), the guys jumped on their love for Shark Week while also displaying their goofy personalities that certainly make fans want to have a pint with them or while watching the week-long event.

Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to showcase your personality and have some fun!
